Stay safe around the Railway

An important message from the Community Safety Manager at Network Rail whose role it is to ensure young people understand the dangers both on and near the railway and the far-reaching consequence of someone’s decision to trespass.

Whilst schools and colleges are closed at present due to CoViD-19, it is even more important to reinforce some key rail safety messages to ensure everyone understand the dangers surrounding the railway and knows how to keep safe.

Key messages:
• At present, passenger and freight trains are still running on all our lines but emergency timetables are in operation so never presume you know when the next train will pass
• It is against the law to trespass on the railway and can result in a fine of £1000
• The Electricity is ALWAYS switched on around the railway
• Always Stop, Look and Listen before using a Level Crossing

You can access educational resources on rail safety via the Network Rail website at

For younger children Network Rail created our ‘Stay safe with Thomas’ story book which you can download for free via www.networkrail.co.uk/Thomas

The link to a hard-hitting anti-trespass campaign is http://www.youvstrain.co.uk
Please note this is suitable for children aged over 11 years old.

If you would like any additional information or would be interested in a rail safety assembly once schools return to normal working then please contact the Network Rail national helpline https://www.networkrail.co.uk/communities/contact-us . There is no cost to the school at all.

Thank you for helping to keep our communities safe when near the railway.
